NOTE: As mentioned in the author’s biography in her book, Betsy’s bio would be one sentence long. So while Bella the dog is important and wonderful, I as Betsy’s publisher will expand upon the bio she wrote: “Betsy lives with her dog Bella in a 100-year-old house in Coronado, California.”

Let me start by quoting Betsy:
.“I offer this book as a personal beacon for others caring for loved ones adrift in the often unfathomable world of Lewy Body Dementia.”
In writing a book, many authors focus on their need to “say something.” In Betsy’s case, it was always about sharing her experiences as a way to help others, and I have already witnessed this happening. Thank you Betsy!
I also know that she wanted to share her beloved Pete with the world. The love in their story is sweet, real, and quite wonderful! And just so you know, Pete and Betsy met at the pool, and one of their favorite swims together was the Maui Channel (10 miles) in 2004. Click for more information about Pete.

A Little more about Betsy
Betsy received her B.A. in art history from Wellesley College in 1959, earned her M.A. in art history in 1960. In her 40s, after raising four children, she returned for her Ph.D. in Humanities from University of California San Diego. She worked as a Professor of Humanities at UCSD from 1985 until she retired in 2000.
Betsy's previous book, Dante and Me, a young adult book, was published in 2009. The book follows Dante Alighieri during his years in exile in Italy in the early fourteenth century. Through the character of Benito, a young orphan boy who accompanies Dante on his many adventures, the story becomes a coming-of-age narrative, rooted in many of Dante’s primary themes, such as good vs. evil, the communal over the individual, and the importance of voicing ideas and feelings. It is also a tribute to all things Italian, including the language and the landscape.
Swimming
Swimming has been an important part of Betsy’s life for more than 70 years, first as a nationally ranked age group swimmer in Indiana, and from 1971 on, as one of the top-ranked Masters Swimmers in the world.
For many years Betsy swam a 6:00 am swim workout at least 6 days a week. Her current “lighter” workout is four 7:30 am workouts a week. Betsy estimates that in her lifetime she has swum more than 32,000 miles in swim workouts, a distance that would more than circumnavigate the globe. Additionally, Betsy still loves swimming in the ocean, for both workouts and events.
Betsy’s swimming achievements are impressive: Betsy has set over 40 world records for backstroke, butterfly and individual medley. Her world record for the 10K freestyle of 3:13:48 set in 2002 for women aged 65-69 still holds today. Betsy has 32 “All Star” listings, 54 “All American” listings and 1,211 Top Ten Swims. You will not be surprised that Betsy is in the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.
Family
Pete and Betsy have six children and eleven grandchildren, and one Bella.
